stewart middle SCHOOL

Client: Tacoma Public Schools

The site surrounding this renovated 1920’s-era building was re-imagined with an eye toward the needs of a modern school environment.  A balance between play and social spaces helped define outdoor environments that also provided a connection between the original building and a newly added wing.

Community engagement was an important aspect of the site design. A beloved community garden was preserved on the hillside, and basketball courts were added to encourage activity outside of school hours.  A large ‘stramp’ feature serves as a dynamic expression of grade change and provides a connection between the plaza area and the track and field below.

Completed while working at AHBL, Inc.

Role: Principal-in-Charge
